Wooden Plaques, Awards and Trophies

We use local wood mills to source any wood types required and boards can be made up for larger pieces too. The pieces pictured were constructed from 9mm cherry wood and are shaped in the shape of a specific boats transom (this is the back end of the boat). The award, once cut and engraved, was sanded to remove any residue and unwanted staining from the vaporised resin in the wood. It was then finished with a matt varnish and also a metal hanger fixed to the rear. The text and images were laser engraved to a depth of around 1mm to give it a better contrast and look when hung on the wall.

Each type of wood has a different look when larger areas are engraved to a depth. This is due to the varying densities of the parts which make up the wood. Slow growing hardwood will have tighter wave as the density changes produced by the slow winter and fast summer growing periods are are across a smaller distance. Pine for example will have a relatively large wavelength when engraved compared to an oak which will be quite small. When engraving small text this effect is negligible unless big bold areas are included in the font.
